6 juill. 1776 - Declaration of the Causes and Necessity of Taking Up Arms

Description:

A document written by Congressman John Dickinson (who borrowed much of the text from Thomas Jefferson) that explained the reasoning behind the American Revolutionary War. Specifically, it explained that the colonists found the Intolerable Acts, the taxes, and the Declaratory Act as examples of Great Britain attempting to unconstitutionally assert its dominance over the colonies. It assured the British that the colonists did not seek independence, and that they would end their rebellion if the oppression would stop. However, the document was published two days after the Declaration of Independence, and four days after the Lee Resolution, meaning that there would be no returning to the British Empire.
