14 mars 221 av. J.-C. - Beginning of the Qin Dynasty

Description:

The Qin dynasty lasted from 221-206 BCE. The Qin dynasty was very important in Chinese history regardless of its brevity. It proceeded the Zhou dynasty, and it ended when Liu Bang ascended to king of Han in 206 BCE. Despite how short it was, the Qin dynasty left important marks on Chinese culture. In fact, the name "China" is derived from the name Qin, which comes from “Ch’in” in Roman documentation. Following the Zhou Dynasty, China became involved in multiple conflicts with neighboring regions. Its origins date back to about 771 BCE, when a barbarian invasion drove the Zhou rulers eastwards. The Qin soon became responsible for guarding the western border, and they gradually moved eastward and eventually conquered the original Zhou territories. Early in the Qin Empire, Legalism became very popular. This government practice was thought of by Shang Yang, who was a foreign advisor. During his time as a minor ruler, Shang Yang revived an uncommon practice. Emperor Shi Huangdi approved of Shang Yang's ideas and used them across his kingdom. In the year 210 BCE, emperor Shi Huangdi died on a journey through the kingdom. The people were convinced that these trips were designed for the inspection of the empire, but later evidence suggests that the emperor was looking for a mythical elixir of immortality. In his later years, Shi Huangdi ordered the construction of his Terracotta Army of 8,000 warriors. The true cause of his death is still unknown.
