Description: During the Civil War, Confederate Soldiers came to Robeson County and took young Lumbee men. They enslaved the men and made them work on Confederate fortifications. The young men built Fort Fisher in Wilmington, North Carolina. After watching his father, Allen Lowery, and brother, William Lowery, a young man by the name of Henry Berry Lowery led a revolt against the Confederates and the Robeson County power structure. They would raid plantations and give to the poor. Henry’s motives were to help his tribe, the Lumbees, survive because they were starting to starve.
