John Major confounded the opinion polls by winning a tight general election victory in 1992 but he never recovered from the financial chaos of Black Wednesday when the £ crashed out of the European exchange rate mechanism. The remainder of Major's time was characterised by infighting with Tory Eurosceptics and Opposition allegations of "sleaze".
