Their motive was to wipe out Pacific American military fleets so the Japanese could easily obtain Southeast Asia without the U.S. stopping them.This event was significant to WWII because it brought the United States into the war that they were trying to avoid, and it changed the war because of how powerful the U.S. forces were. The U.S. was able to turn the war around and come out with victory in the end by getting Japan back when they bombed Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
