Supposed to be a philanthropic organization, but Tweed brought a reign of corruption
* By 1860 was in top position, led the Tweed Ring
* Dominated NYC politics, bought votes, encouraged corruption in courts, embezzled city funds (took a total of $30,000,000 to $200,000,000)
* 1871 City Court House remodeled, the attention brought to money taken by Tweed thanks to political cartoons and criticism, Tammany Hall leaders not reelected in November 1871
* Tweed Ring tried, imprisoned, Boss Tweed (forgery and larceny) escapes in 1875 and flees to Cuba and Spain

Thomas Nast: He portrayed Boss Tweed as a filthy and heavily wealthy individual who was rude. Boss Tweed knew about the cartoons and was not a fan of them. He believed they portrayed him differently than he was.
