The Enlightenment was a period starting in the 1700’s which was a philosophical movement that promoted reason and individualism. It began first in Europe, but then spread to other parts of the world, carrying its idea’s of progress, liberty, separation of church and state, and more to all parts of the globe. The Enlightenment undermined the authority of the monarchy and led to the French Revolution, which in turn was an example for the colonists to follow; after seeing the power of this ideology many in the colonies were influenced and bought into it. It was a major factor in the revolution because it made the colonists think individually and question the power and authority of the church and monarchy, which allowed them to justify their actions in works such as “Common Sense” by Thomas Paine.
