It was during this ten years of peace that the Lord now commanded Mormon to go out and cry repentance to the people. 27 years earlier Mormon had tried to preach to the people, but God had prevented it. Now the Lord gives the people one last chance to repent.
The preaching of Mormon proved vain, however, as the people refused to turn from their wickedness. For nearly ten years Mormon preached, and it seems that none or at least few listened. Not enough to be significant to the population at least.
At this time Mormon would have been about 42 years old, and thus his son, Moroni, was likely already born and in his early teens.
