1 janv. 1639 - Newport founded

Description:

The settlement of Newport was founded in modern-day Aquidneck Island (Rhode Island). It was settled by eight people, including William Brenton, Henry Bull, Jeremy Clarke, John Clarke, John Coggeshall, William Coddington, Nicholas Easton, and Thomas Hazard, most of whom were originally settlers of Portsmouth. They were quite tolerant of other religions, most notably Judaism. In 1658, they invited a group of Jews to settle in Newport. There, they built Touro Synagogue, the oldest synagogue in American history. They colony grew quickly, becoming the largest out of the four settlements that would be merged to form Rhode Island (itself, Warwick, Portsmouth, and Providence Plantations).
