Description:

Bartolomeu Dias was sent by the Portuguese to discover a sea route to Asia by sailing around the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa. His expedition opened up a new trade route with East Asia that was less dependant on whoever controlled the land surrounding the Red Sea.
