Robert E. Lee was a brilliant commander who led the Confederate effort in the Civil War. Lee was talented at seeing the big picture in War and was thus responsible for several victories for the Confederates. However, for all his strategy, the South's economic problems, weaker industry, and fewer men, among more factors, led to the downfall of the South and Lee surrendered at the Appomattox Courthouse.
