(On this day the Thirteen Colonies, established in eastern North America by the British, declared independence from Great Britain. This was the first declaration of independence by a colony against their European founders, but it would certainly not be the last. While the history of the US has been turbulent and dark at times (darkness including but not limited to: warmongering, genocide of the indigenous, slavery, and the disenfranchisement and persecution of minorities), their system of elective democracy has been the blueprint for many other nations who aspire to republican ideals. Note how things really seem to pop off after this.)
