20 mars 1956 - Tunisia independent from France
Description:
On this day, Tunisia gained independence from France, who had held it since the Scramble for Africa in the late 19th century. Tunisia immediately came under the rule of a series of authoritarian leaders, and it suffered from poor political freedom and widespread corruption. The Tunisian Revolution in 2011 ousted the dictatorship, not only securing a free Tunisia with a higher quality of life, but also setting off the Arab Spring protests seen throughout the Arab world in the early 2010s.
