On this day, Romania formally declared independence from the Ottoman Empire. The Ottoman Empire at this point was letting its European vassals declare independence without much of a fight, as it focused on strengthening the heart of the empire instead. Romania has seen quite a few territorial disputes and involvements in regional wars.
