19 févr. 1947 - Poland independent from Soviet occupation
Description:
At the end of World War II, the Soviet Union controlled Poland, and occupied it for a couple years. On this day, the Soviets imposed a new government on Poland (the Polish People's Republic) which was effectively independent but still strongly Soviet influenced. This state enjoyed a high quality of life and good social services, but suffered from a totalitarian government. Democracy would be restored in the late 1980s.
