Description:
On this day, backed by the US, Panama declared independence from Colombia. While Panama had been itching for independence for some time, the US intervened so that it might secure a favorable situation in which it could build the Panama Canal. The immediate territory of the Panama Canal even belonged to the US until the end of the century. Modern Panama is one of the most peaceful states in Latin America, with one of the highest qualities of life.
