On this day, Pakistan formally gained independence from the United Kingdom. This was the end result of a decades long political revolution called the Pakistan Movement, which called for the partition of Muslim-majority areas from British India and the creation of an independent state. Pakistan was initially a British Commonwealth (much like Canada or Australia), but fully severed ties from the UK in the '50s. East Pakistan seceded in the 70s, creating Bangladesh. Today Pakistan has ongoing territorial disputes with India, its longtime rival, and China.
