1 janv. 1899 - Aspirin

Description:

Also launched by Bayer, and yet again not discovered by them but only marketed, Aspirin (at first capitalized by virtue of trademark) quite literally made Bayer what it is today: a pharmaceutical company, rather than a company producing dyes and such. Despite the failure of heroin on Bayer’s part, Heinrich Dreser took the Aspirin project and spearheaded it, authoring papers without the names of his colleagues and generally making a fool of himself. Who exactly at Bayer synthesized the formula that was marketed is a matter of debate, between Arthur Eichengrun (a Jew in Nazi Germany at the time of death), who insisted it was his idea, or Felix Hoffmann, who was the original claimholder. Either way, the famous antipyretic, anti-inflammatory painkiller had its trademark dissolved within the States and elsewhere as a result of the Treaty of Versaille, and it remains uncapitalized today as a generic trademark alongside the likes of bandaids, dumpsters, and kleenex wipes.
