(In the aftermath of Belgium's independence, the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg was also able to secure its own independence from the Netherlands. Previously a vassal of the Holy Roman Empire, of the French, and then of the Netherlands, the fortified state of Luxembourg had developed its own language and cultural identity, and had been chomping at the bit for some time to gain independence.
