On this day, Liberia declared independence from the United States. Liberia had been established (without the permission of the locals, mind) by the American Colonization Society as a destination for free-born black people and freed black slaves, in the hopes they might leave the United States instead of integrating with the white population. Many Afro-Caribbeans also migrated to Liberia before its independence. Much like the US, it has a shady history of mistreatment and disenfranchisement of the indigenous people. It also struggled with dictatorship for part of the 20th century. Liberia is the oldest sovereign democracy in Africa.Ajouté au bande de temps:
