Description:
On this day, the Korean territory administered by the Soviet Union declared independence as the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, or North Korea. Prior to the end of World War II, the Korean peninsula had been annexed by the Japanese Empire. When the war ended, the Korean peninsula was seized by Allied forces. The northern half was occupied by the Soviet Union, and the southern half was occupied by the United States. North Korea was strongly influenced by the Soviets for years, even after it gained independence. Since its establishment North Korea has been ruled by the Kim Dynasty, which rules the most totalitarian government on Earth.
