14 mai 1948 - Israel formed from much of Palestine's territory by the UN
Description:
There's not really any way to describe the formation of Israel without making people mad, but... here we are anyway.
On this day, the Jewish Agency declared the sovereignty of the State of Israel. The UN had placed the Jewish Agency in charge of much of the former territory of Mandatory Palestine, a post-Ottoman UK Protectorate, following World War II in the hopes of creating a safe and independent nation for the beleaguered Jewish people. The initial Partition Plan sought to create an independent Israeli state and an independent Palestinian state with equal economic standings, as well as make Jerusalem an international territory, but things quickly fell apart. Israel desired more of Palestine's territory, Palestine rejected the idea of territorial division in the first place, and both parties wanted control of Jerusalem. Over the following decades Israel would go to war with most of its Arab neighbors, who occupied Palestine for decades in the hope of bolstering its sovereignty. Since the '60s, however, Israel has occupied most of Palestine in what many consider to be the longest military occupation in the world. Because of its occupation of Palestine, many UN members refuse to recognize Israel or engage in diplomacy.
Israel is one of the most prosperous nations in the Middle East, with one of the highest qualities of life, but its legacy continues to be darkened by its harsh treatment of Palestine.
