On this day the Kingdom of Iraq formally declared independence from the United Kingdom, which had held it since World War I. Iraq would later change its government to a republic, but its sovereignty was unchanged. Unfortunately, Iraq has struggled for much of its history with war, dictatorship, terrorism, and foreign invasion. Largely headed by the US, the Iraq War of the early 21st century led to the deaths of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of civilians.
