One day after Pakistan, India formally declared independence from the United Kingdom. India had been home to an independence movement for almost a century, with its last phase marked by its non-violence and notable leadership (namely Mohandas Gandhi). Similarly to Pakistan, India was initially a British Commonwealth but shortly severed ties with the UK entirely. India has since seen a stable government and increasing power on the world stage, but continues to suffer from poverty and social inequities.
