On this day Iceland formally declared independence from Denmark. Iceland had been largely autonomous for some time, and had been home to an independence movement since the early 19th century. For a couple of decades, Iceland had a relationship with Denmark similar to that of Canada with the UK, but it completely severed ties during World War II.
