5 nov 1838 - Honduras independent from Federal Republic of Central America
Description:
For similar reasons to Costa Rica and Nicaragua, on this day Honduras officially split from the Federal Republic of Central America. Honduras spent much of its early history under the thumb of US fruit companies (referred to as a "banana republic"). It also suffered from unrest and dictatorship for much of the 20th century. Today Honduras is making social and political progress, but continues to struggle with poverty and natural disasters.
