On this day, Haiti was officially freed from its occupation by US military forces. The US had occupied it since World War I, when the possibility of anti-American leadership had made it nervous (said anti-American leadership had arisen shortly after the US "seized" most of the Haitian National Bank's money in 1914, but maybe that's just a coincidence). Haiti has suffered for much of its history since then with dictatorship, violence, crippling debt, and natural disasters.
