(On this day Guatemala declared independence from the short-lived Mexican Empire, which had absorbed it quickly after it declared independence from Spain 2 years prior. Guatemala would become the seat of the Federal Republic of Central America, which attempted to consolidate the former Spanish colonies of Central America.
