1 janv. 1600 - Beginning of Dahomey Kingdom (Embryonic Benin)

Description:

(Date is approximate) (Around this year, the Kingdom of Dahomey was established by the Fon people in what is now Benin. Dahomey was a trading power, at one point becoming a major West African port in the Atlantic slave trade (it's worth noting that most African nations didn't realize what they were sending people into; slavery in West Africa tended to work more like the indentured servitude experienced by criminals in the colonial US, though that doesn't excuse their actions). Dahomey was also notable for its all-female military unit and for being the center of Vodun (Voodoo) in West Africa. While Dahomey would ultimately fall to French colonialism, it left a lasting impact on the local culture, and for the first 15 years of its independence Benin was even called Dahomey.)
