(On this day, the Flemish and French of the Netherlands' Southern Provinces officially declared independence, creating the Kingdom of Belgium. Since this initial turmoil, Belgium has largely been one of the most peaceful countries in Europe... though it did take part in the violent "Scramble for Africa" later on in the 19th century, claiming what's now the Democratic Republic of the Congo, so I guess it's all a matter of perspective.
