On this day, the six British colonies of Australia consolidated into the self-governed Australian Commonwealth. Like all British Commonwealths, modern Australia is completely autonomous, remaining in "free association" with the UK through ceremonial deference to the British Monarch. Much like Canada and the US, Australia is a successful, peaceful state whose history has been marred by mistreatment of the indigenous people.
