On this day, Afghanistan was freed from British occupation following the end of the Third Anglo-Afghan War. For much of the 19th century, Afghanistan had acted as a "buffer state" between British India and Russia's Central Asian territories, and had spent most of the tug-of-war controlled by the British East India Company. Afghanistan's history has been tumultuous ever since, marred by autocracy and terrorism. The recent war between the US and the Taliban has left much of Afghanistan scarred, as many of the resulting deaths have been those of innocent civilians.
