By the time the British marched on Nanjing, the Qing had realized they had lost and decided to negotiate - the resulting Treaty of Nanking was extremely one-sided and favored the British. The Chinese were forced to increase the number of treaty ports from 1 to 5 (Canton and new additions Xiamen, Fuzhao, Ningbo, and Shanghai). Hong Kong was made a British colony, and the British enjoyed low tariffs and extraterritoriality. Opium importation was legalized in 1920, more treaty ports opened, and French began sending in missionaries.
