Description:

Device used during the French Revolution that would behead those convicted of crimes against the revolution with a large blade. Considered to be a humane way to execute people as opposed to hanging or other alternatives. Used to execute prominent figures such as Robespierre and Louis XVI. It is estimated that approximately 40,000 people may have lost their lives to one these devices during the revolution.
