Panama Canal- November 3, 1903
The U.S. got the Panama Canal from the French for $40 million. Panama declared it’s independence from Colombia and granted the U.S. control of the Panama Canal zone to build the canal, once signing the Hay-Bunau-Varilla Treaty. The canal was being built for access from the Pacific Ocean right to the Atlantic Ocean without having to go around South America. Teddy Roosevelt oversaw the building of it, and it was finished and opened on August 15th, 1914.
