The Chinese Exclusion Act in 1882, signed by President Chester A. Arthur, was the first significant act that excluded immigration from a certain group of people into the United States. On the West Coast, the Americans were significantly impacted by the Chinese people coming to the US and taking jobs and spreading illness.
