Description:

Attack on Fort Sumter (start of Civil War)- Apr 12, 1861 – Apr 13, 1861

The Battle of Fort Sumter was the first major battle of the Civil War. Fort Sumter was a costal fort in South Carolina, that at the time, the Union occupied after South Carolina succeeded. When Lincoln announced his plans to supply the fort with materials, Confederate General P.G.T. Beauregard and his men attacked Fort Sumter on April 12th, 1861. After 34 hours of firing back and forth at each other, the Union and their 86 soldiers, led by U.S. Major Robert Anderson, surrendered the fort on April 13th. Confederate forces then took over for almost four years after. This attack formally started the Civil War with the North against the South.
