3 mars 1820 - Missouri Compromise
Description:
Missouri compromise- March 3, 1820
This compromise drew a line at 36 30’ N and every state above this line (except Missouri) was considered a free state and every state below that line was considered a slave state. Prior to Missouri admitting to be a state, there was an equal amount of slave and free states, at 11 slave and 11 free. Missouri wanted to be a slave state, but proposed a compromise as slave’s kids can be freed from slavery once they were 25 years old. Massachusetts then gave up some of their land to form another free state, now Maine, making it equal again with 12 free and 12 slave states. There was lots of tension over this because both sides wanted equal slave and free states, or more states on their side, because then the states would have equal or more say in the House and Senate, with their state representatives. This compromise was important because it completely divided the country into two sides over slavery, the North and the South.
