The nineteenth century was dubbed "the great sanitary awakening" because filth was identified as both a cause of disease and a vehicle of transmission. The embrace of improved sanitation and cleanliness that followed changed the way the public viewed health and illness came to be seen as an indicator of poor social and economical conditions.
