After all the many victories of Moroni and other Nephites, many Lamanites were no longer attached to a particular army. As survivors fled from each city they slowly came back together and formed a new army.

This army of Lamanites then moved to attack the city of Nephihah. Now, Moroni had taken most of his forces to take other cities, thinking that Pahoran was sending reinforcements to help maintain Nephihah. But, because of the insurrection of the Kingmen, no assistance had been sent.

Because of this the Lamanites had little difficulty in taking the city of Nephihah, which was a very great stronghold.
