20 nov 1917 - Foundation of the UNIA
Description:
The Universal Negro Improvement Association was founded by Marcus Garvey. He promoted the ideology of pan-africanism, which stated that all people of African descent were connected through the universal experience of slavery. He believed that African-Americans should migrate back to Africa and build a society for themselves rather than trying to fit into that of the white man. He also coined the term “Black is Beautiful”, which inspired the black nationalism that Malcolm X worked into his ideology.
