"The Pickwick Papers" was first published as monthly episodes in a magazine and was an instant success. Dickens wasn't just a gifted storyteller but he was also a writer with a social conscience. In particular, he describes how poverty and corruption affected ordinary people's lives. This can be seen in such classics as "Oliver Twist", "David Copperfield", "Great Expectations". Dickens had a special talent for giving his characters memorable and appropriate-sounding names, such as Gradgrind, Heep, and Bumble.
