6 mars 1857 - Dred Scott Court Case
Description:
The Dred Scott controversy was a supreme court case that arose regarding the freedom of one Dred Scott. Dred Scott was a slave in the slave state of Missouri, but he was taken to live in the free state of Illinois with his master. When he was brought back to Missouri, abolitionists helped him build a case for freedom which was eventually brought to the supreme court. The court ruled that Scott was property of his owner and therefore had no rights whatsoever so he could not sue for his freedom. This was a major point of contention between the North and the South in the years before the civil war.
