1 janv. 1858 - Harper's Ferry

Description:

John Brown attacked and captured the federal armory in Harpers Ferry, Virginia. Brown and his men began taking hostages from the town, such as Lewis Washington (Relative to George Washington). Brown also encouraged slaves to run away and join him, where they would be armed. Very few slaves join because most slaves in the area were well-off and treated decently.
However, Brown and his men shoot a railway employee, causing local militia and U.S. Marines, led by Robert E. Lee, surround the armory and attack. Brown’s men are killed, and Brown and four followers are tried, where they are all sentenced guilty and hung.

Due to these events, Brown became a national martyr and incited many others to become more vocal against slavery. It was later revealed that several wealthy New Yorkers revealed to have backed Brown.
