The Cold War was a period of immense tension between the United States and the Soviet Union between 1947 and 1991. The two countries never actually fought a war, however they engaged in several proxy wars, and arms and space races. There was a looming threat of nuclear warfare because both countries were developing new and dangerous weapons.
