It appears that not long after the Nephites had joined the Mulekites in Zarahemla, there was a group of Nephites who wanted to return to the Land of Nephi.
In this first expedition to reclaim their inheritance they were led by a man who is not named. However, one of the group was a man named Zeniff, who was a spy to scout out the Lamanites.

Zeniff and the leader of the expedition were at odds with each other. The leader wanted to attack and kill the Lamanites. Zeniff, having seen the good in the Lamanites while out spying, wanted to make peace. The group was divided between the two and soon the contention came to open conflict, resulting in all but 50 being killed.

When all this was over the last 50 returned to Zarahemla.
