20 juin 1789 - Tennis Court Oath
Description:
On this day, the people of the third estate came together and swore an oath to never separate and only reassemble when the time requires them to. They no longer called themselves the third estate, but rather the “National Assembly”. It is called the Tennis Court Oath because the National Assembly was locked out of their usual meeting room (possibly the king ordering them to disband), so they moved their meeting to an indoor tennis court.
This event is important in understanding the French Revolution because it acts like how the Americans have the Declaration of Independence, and how they swore to see change in how a nation ruled.
