9 août 1974 - President Nixon Resigns
Description:
President Nixon became a part of the Watergate scandal while running for reelection in 1972. Five men were arrested after breaking into the Democratic National Committee offices at the Watergate Hotel in Washington D.C. One of the buglers was connected with Nixon's Committee to Re-elect the president (CREEP), which did not affect Nixon's victory in reelection. But once two journalists began investigating the break in, they discovered that the break in had been ordered by someone high up in the White House. After members of his own administration began resigning, Nixon resigned on August 9, 1974 and Vice-President Gerald Ford became the President. This event caused a breech in trust between Americans and the government, which spilled over into other things such as the Vietnam War.
