Description:

After Austria was weakened by Prussia by war, the Hungarians try for independence again

The monarchy gave in and granted Hungary autonomy and as a compromise created a dual monarchy -- Austro-Hungarian Empire
- joined by a shared monarch and common ministries of finance, defense, and foreign affairs

However, it was weakened by nationalism
- parliament so gridlocked that they ruled by decree (angered Czechs and Poles)
- Magyars dominated the peasantry and other minorities --> parliament was only represented by the Magyar elite
- only hungarian was allowed to be spoken in schools (angers Croatians and Romanians)
