1500s- economic condition of peasants was different in different places but was worse than it was in the 1400s

crop failures earlier made things worse

big revolts started in Swabia, Thuringia, the Rhineland, and Saxony

slogans came from protestant theology- “G/d’s righteousness” and “word of g/d” used

Luther wanted overthrow of Roman catholic church, NOT secular powers

Thought revolt against secular powers “would hasten the end of civilized society”

nobility mercilessly crushed the revolt

estimate around 75,000 peasants were killed in revolt

war strengthened positions of lay leaders

Reformation became less popular

Peasants’ condition improved a little bit- “enclosed fields, meadows and forests were returned to public use”
